Notes for Ellen “Nellie” Elizabeth Burke
Regarding our grandmother (paternal) her name was either Nell (Nellie) Eliz(s)abeth Burke or first name of Ellen (for which Nellie might be a legitimate nickname). Have no proof of either version. Had no notion of the Ellen name until after 1960. She was always Granda Nellie to us. But my mom said that when we visited in 1960, essentially on her deathbed, Nellie said that she disliked that name and prefered to be called by her "real name". Which I thought was Elizabeth but may have been Ellen. What I do remember is that Grandma smiled a ton when my mom called her by the preferred name, and said "no one has called me that in many years." — subsequent research shows name on marriage certificate to be Ellen E Burke

US Census of 1900 lists Ellen/Nellie’s birthplace as Montana. Its pretty clearly written as Montana, not just a typo for Missouri. No other source points there, altho many say Cincinatti Ohio and a few talk about St Louis. — Pat Farrell, 20 jan 2016

Raised Bob Dahlquist after his mother (Merceses Ann) died. Often took Bob to horse race track, where she and her friends would combine quarters and bet on races. She would leave when she'd lost $2.

This raises questions of the accuracy of the Brookly, Iowa claim, which is solely from family folklore
