Glad to be of help whenever I can. I think I'm the reigning archivist
for info on the Omaha branches of the Burns/Burke/Farrell families, since
I lived the first seventeen years of my life with Grandmother Nellie, who had a willing audience for her endless accounts of all the Irish relatives.
I had the good fortune to be present at the wedding of Andrew and Clare at
St. Anne's Church at 24th and Poppleton in mid-Omaha in 1936. St Anne's was
the Scoggin home parish since it was only a couple of blocks from their home on South 25th Avenue.
One note on a typo: Andrew and Ruth Claire were born in the home Grandfather Daniel
built in 1910 at 2517 "G" Street. He also built 2519 next door with an identical floor plan,
but the family lived at 2517.
Best wishes for the Christmas season. and, Patrick, stay off the icy roads
!
Bob

Cousin Bob Dahlquist grew up there, I've included him in this email, his brother Horton was fire chief there, and had five kids. At least some of them
still live in Omaha (Mercedes and Catherine) as adults.
I'm sure Bob can help you a lot.I'm friends with Mercedes and Catherine Bettin on Facebook

The most interesting thing that we have been doing since all has gotten quiet around here is
reading the old letters. I am typing 3 copies of them so that you and Pack can have them, too.
I may send what I have finished with more to come, if you like. We are really enjoying them
and find Uncle Peter's letters are the best. I feel that I am getting to tknow the Farrell
family better and I have only finished from 1987 to 1884 so far.

Remember the one I showed you written by Peter Farrell in Co Cork to his brother, Dan in Omaha
in 1900? Well, knowing that the Irish do not move around the country very much, I wrote to
"Occupant" at the address in the letter, and within 2 weeks, I received a letter from Miss
Kate Farrell who lives at that address and who had a grandfather named Peter, who lived
there too!!!! So we have found a second cousin still living in Ireland. The brother,
Dan, mentioned was Andy's grandfather, who came to Omaha to live with his daughter).

That is not all. Kate sent my letter to her brother, Peter, who lives in the Bronx, N.Y.
and he wrote me, too. I will send you copies so that you can follow it. Sometimes it
gets confusing. I have not had time to answer Peter's or Kate's letters as yet, but
indent to do so at the first opp.

Pat: Your take on the garages is correct. In the pic of your mom, Orva and my mom, it was the wristwatch, the wristwatch! My mother never wore her watch on her right arm. I think that the Ford Plant was in Missouri; could you be thinking of Kansas because Uncle Bud and his family lived for a time in Shawnee-Mission, Kansas, a suburb of KC??. I was never aware that KC, Kansas was considered inferior, but that sometimes happens when you have a big city right next to a smaller one.

"Pop" considered himself to be Welsh, with some Irish and "Pennsylvania Dutch" mixed in, as I recall. He was firmly Catholic in his religious identity, although not practicing for a number of years, I believe because of his divorce of his second wife Rose (Uncle Jack's mother) and subsequent remarriage to Winnie. At the time of his death, he was reconciled with the Catholic Church.

Grandpa Scogin retired at age 65, August 1947.=A0 With regard to his locomotives, they were assigned to a Division of the railroad; the Nebraska Division, for example, stretched from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Cheyenne, Wyoming. There were several crew-change points along the Division, one of which was at Grand Island. In those days, the distance between crew-change points was regarded as a "day's work" for the engine crew, so they would have to lay over for a specified rest period, then catch a run back to their home terminal. Grandpa ran his trains from Council Bluffs to Grand Island, rested at Grand Island, then caught another run back to Council Bluffs. His locomotive, however, continued on through several crew changes until it reached Cheyenne, where it was serviced and readied for the trip eastward to Council Bluffs. So there was a continous rotation of locomotives, and it was the luck of the draw as to which one Grandpa would get on his next run.

My father died of cancer on May 14, 2007 and my mother died of COPD on February 14, 2009.  Both died at home in Jackson, AL.  Both were cremated and their ashes spread in the Gulf of Mexico per their request.  My brother and I waded about chest deep into the waters when we spread their ashes.  A pretty interesting experience.

Lynn and I were the same age. I think that I was at least a junior in high school. Maybe the incident occurred during the summer between junior and senior year, which would put the date at 1950. Lynn did not go to Creighton Prep with me -- I don't know where he went to high school, either Tech or Central -- but even so, I would see him often enough at the usual high school gathering spots, probably at K-B's an ice cream joint popular with all that crowd, on 30th and Burt, close to Prep and to Tech. Long since gone, unfortunately, converted into a first-class parking lot, I suppose.

Over the years, Nellie and I had visited the Scogins and Florence and Lynn frequently enough that we knew each other quite well. And later on I did see him around town often with his distinctive car. I can't tell you the make or year, but it had to be a '38 or '39 Ford or thereabouts, souped up by the standards of the times, and garishly painted. And all the world knew it was Lynn's car.

The incident in question happened at about midnight (I never stayed out later than midnight !!?) and I was waiting for public transportation (bus or streetcar) on the corner of 33rd and Burt, right next to Tech High, to eventually take me to South Omaha and home at 2517 "G" Street. At that hour of the night, the buses ran sporadically, and at a certain hour, they quit running altogether, so, I was steeling myself for the long walk home. When, out of the black, there whizzed by me this pyschedelically painted car, so I yelled out at the top of my voice: "LYNNNNN FREEEEER." I didn't know if he heard me or whether he would bother to stop. At the speed he was going, it took him a full block to stop. He jammed in into reverse, backed up to where I was and told me to hop in. He kindly took me all the way home. I have been forever grateful to him ever since.

That was indeed a happy experience. Thanks for asking for the story.

David was born on June 12, 1953 at the US Naval Hospital in Camp Lejeune, NC. He was a graduate of West Springfield High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from George Mason University where he double majored in Business and Data Processing.

After college, David worked briefly as a computer programmer before leaving to pursue a career in music. He was a founding member of the southern rock band The Roadducks, playing bass and touring with them for more than 6 years. David leveraged his business education to formally incorporate the band as The Dixie Roadducks, Inc. Long before you could buy off-the-shelf accounting software, David developed, from scratch, several computer programs to manage the band’s finances.

In 1983, David chose to leave the music business and return to computer programming. He remained with the same information technology company, now called Distributed Solutions, Inc., for nearly 40 years. He was still employed by them at the time of his passing.

David was very mechanically inclined and was the ultimate do-it-yourselfer. He was always very generous with his time, doing home improvements and home repairs for his family and anyone else who needed it. He also spent a lot of his time doing repairs in his own home and on his cars. He kept his 1986 Chevy Monte Carlo on the road for more than 36 years and 350,000 miles. He still drove it daily, right up until the end.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and was able to realize his dream of driving an official stock car on the Monster Mile track in Dover, Delaware. He was also a lifelong Washington Redskins fan and season ticket holder.David is survived by his girlfriend and partner of 25 years, Lisa Panella, his siblings Debbie, Vicki, Scott, and Rob, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 3rd from 5 pm to 8 pm at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home in Fairfax, VA. A graveside service will take place the following day on Saturday, June 4th at 11 am at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington. In memory of David, please consider making a donation to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America https://lcfamerica.org/

Yes, Andrew became wealthy, at least for a while.  I have not tried to determine how much land he acquired, but at its peak, Andrew owned somewhere near 400 acres.  After his stroke around 1880, his wealth apparently declined until he died in 1888.   Some of the land was sold off.  The remainder was divided among his children.

I have attached the materials on John N. Scogin.

DUNLAP, IOWA
----------------------------
Death of Mrs. P. J. Burke

Death has again invaded the ranks of the old residents of Harrison county. At 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, at her home in Dunlap, occurred the sad and unexpected death of Mrs. P. J. Burke.
Mrs. Burke, who maiden name was Burns, was born in Galway, Ireland in 1845, and was at the time of her death 61 years old.
She came to America about 50 years ago, and was married to Mr. P. J. Burke in 1871. To this union was born ten children, all of whom survive her, but two who died in infancy.
Mrs. Burke was a faithful and devoted member of St. Patrick's church, where she has attended services during her life in Dunlap.
When it was made known to her that death was approaching, she calmly resigned herself to the will of God and devoted the short time that was left her in preparing herself for death which came to her peacefully on Saturday afternoon.
Her simple and blameless life was one of self-sacrificing and untiring love for her family.
Her host of friends join with the bereaved husband and children in mourning her loss. There survives, besides her husband, Mrs. D. J. Farrell, Mrs. A. King, Mrs. P. DeVaney, Frances and Margaret of South Omaha, Harry W. Burke of Randolph, Neb., Joseph P. Burke and Miss Jennie Burke of this city, also two brothers, Mr. Wm. Burns of Panama, Ia., Mr. J. Burns of Clinton, Ia., and three sisters, Mrs. J. Smith of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Mary Goodman, Connorsville, Ind., and Mrs. Ellen Queeney of Panama, Ia.
The people of Dunlap join in condolences to the afflicted relatives, who knew best the sterling worth and the kindly disposition of the dear departed.
The memory of her good deeds, of her wise counsel, will ever live in benedition.
Funeral services were held on Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Patrick's church, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Father Hanson, followed by a touching sermon on her simple, self-sacrificing life. The body was taken to Pleasant Hill cemetery for interment. Many friends and sympathizers accompanied the remains to pay their last sad tribute to the departed one.

Family History Notes Written By Veronica Ruther
Grandma probably wrote this in the 60s at mother's request.  One entry is the news that Great grandfather Burke was married before he married Bridget Burns.  The story is that the first wife died on the boat ride over.  He had daughters with this wife and they were "show girls".  Nellie confessed to going to so them perform once when they came through Omaha but she said she never told her father because he would have been very mad.  Again, I will find the pages and scan for you, best to read it in the original form.

I think she wrote it in 1978...letter mentions the letters from Katie and Peter Farrell...Katie's letter is dated Feb 1978.  I see that your mom passed away in October 1978...was it sudden?  She probably did not have time to follow up.

Dan Farrell b1825 was living with daughter Anna Farrell Caldwell.  His other two daughters died at the turn of the 20th century (Mary, a friend of Nellie's, spinal meningitis in 1890s and Elizabeth hit by the train in 1908)

I blew up the size of the census report that you sent to the point that I could make sense of some of the entries and then with my 8X magnifying glass concluded that you were right.  I think the "Enumerator" wrote that the data was for the street "38th and P."  That would put the house right in the middle of what was politely called "Sheeny-town," the Irish enclave around St. Mary's parish at 36th and Q.  I knew many old Irish families who lived in the area.  When I was a kid, we spent many hours at Christie Heights ball field across the street from St. Mary's church and cemetery (that's where all the Farrells [including my mother] are buried.)

Subject: Daniel Joseph Farrell
Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 22:36:41 -0500

Last week I got my father-in-law to fill me in on more of his (and my
husband's) family history. What I learned is as follows:

Daniel Joseph Farrell was born in County Cork, Ireland August 15, 1825.
He had other siblings; but, I only know that the youngest was Peter
Farrell. The family moved from Langford to Charlesville (now named Rath
Luric) in the 1880s. Daniel Joseph Farrell immigrated to the USA (date
unknown) and Peter Farrell remained in Ireland.

Of Peter's descendants, I know of a son named Jack Farrell born about
1871, died 1956. Jack had a son, Tom Farrell and a daughter, Kathleen
Farrell. As of 1978, both Tom and Kathleen were still living in Rath
Luric.

According to family lore, Daniel Joseph Farrell entered the USA through
New Orleans, Louisiana and migrated northward along the Mississippi
River.

At some date, either in Ireland or the USA, he married Ann Ward, born
August 15, 1832, in County Cork, Ireland. They had 6 children:
Peter (a railroad engineer);
Daniel Joseph, b. January 29, 1860, d. October 1934;
Ann, who married a Mr. Caldwell;
Elizabeth, who married Hank Cummings;
Mary, b. August 12, 1881, d. May 11, 1899; and
Andrew, b. April 7, 1871, d. April 24, 1892, from a railroad injury.

Daniel Joseph Farrell (b. January 29, 1860, in Iowa or Illinois, buried
in Omaha, Nebraska) married Nellie Elizabeth Burke (b. April 4, 1873, d.
October 11, 1960) on February 6, 1894. They had 9 children:
Helen Veronica, b. July 7, 1895, d. Sept. 8, 1970, m. John N. Ruther;
Mercedes Anne, b. Feb. 10, 1897, d. Aug. 30, 1943, m. Horter Adelbert
Dahlquist;
Kathryn Marie, b. Jan. 16, 1899, d. June, 1902;
Daniel Joseph, b. Nov. 17, 1900, d. 1980;
Baby girl, b. Feb. 4, 1903, lived 2 weeks;
William Patrick, b. June 6, 1905;
Mary Jane, b. Oct. 27, 1907, d. Sept. 29, 1952, m. Edward Amdor;
Andrew Harry, b. Mar. 18, 1910; and
Ruth Claire, b. April 28, 1915, d. July 24, 1930.

Daniel Joseph Farrell (b. Nov. 17, 1900, d. Omaha, Nebraska) married
Josephine Robert (b. Dec. 24, 1899, d. May 18, 1995, Omaha, Nebraska) on
May 26, 1926, Waterloo, Iowa. They had 2 children:
Daniel Joseph III; and
Robert Edward (my father-in-law).

Subject: Re: your dad?

Pat,

Happy to give you some info.  My dad graduated from Creighton University Medical School in 1953.  He attended on the GI bill.  He met and married  my mother in Omaha.  Veronica loved my dad.  My dad's father and two of grandpa's brothers also graduated from Creighton Med School.  My dad did his internship and residency at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland Oregon.  He was a general practioner GP (family practice now). Maureen (Moe) and Pat were born in Portland. After his residency they moved to Butte for the summer so my dad could work for his dad and uncles (summer vacation work).  Dad always promised my mom they would never live in Butte.  They never left.  I was born in Butte while they still lived with my grandparents.  Dad was an outdoorsman.  Grew up hunting and fishing, didn't like to leave Montana much and also felt he couldn't be too far from his practice.  He practiced with his father and uncles for awhile but he had a hard time accepting their "old fashioned" medical ideas.  He picked up a lot of odd jobs in medicine so he could pay the bills.  He was the county doctor and also the doctor for the Union Pacific RR.  The RR job got us free passes in coach mom and all of us road the train every summer to Omaha.  A two day affair with a train change in Ogden, Utah.  I have very fond memories of riding the train...it was the end of an era in the sixties.  Dad never went to Omaha with us (maybe once but didn't stay the whole time).  The summer of 1966 we got back from Omaha and he had been suffering from what he thought were sinus headaches.  Turned out to be a brain tumor.  At the time, they thought it benign so they removed it (twice, actually).  His surgeries were in Portland as Montana didn't have neurosurgeons.  Our parents were gone on and off for about 12 months, my dad's family picked up the slack.  He was one of seven and all but one still lived in Butte.  It was a nomadic life but as a kid, you don't know any different.  The only treatment beyond surgery was an early form of radiation called Cobalt.  They went to Billings for that.  He died in Butte on June 5, 1967.  Life was never the same.....Moe was 13, Pat 12, ME 10, Jo 8, Mike 6 and Willie 4...Five or six years later, after we had moved to Tucson, mom received a questionnaire from Johns-Hopkins...dad was in a study for Glioblastoma (his path slides had been sent all over for second opinions).

My brother Mike is very much like my dad, in looks and personality.  Can talk to anyone, loved by all, not a mean bone in his body, tells great stories and is very funny.  I'm not sure his teenagers appreciate what they've got.  Mike actually married a girl from Butte (got reacquainted at a family wedding, they attended grade school together).  His four kids all know and love Butte.

The reasons mom moved us from Butte, she wasn't "from" there, and that means a lot in Butte, she was 44 and very attractive - hit on by several of dad's married friends, their friends were his friends, not hers.  She had made several of her own friends through competitive tennis.  The Anaconda Company was shutting down operations in Butte and moving to Tucson, the husband of one of her friends was transferred and mom visited them in Tucson in 1968 and 1969,  All of a sudden, she bought land, built a house and moved us to Tucson (1970).  Moe, Pat and I were not happy.  We had a tough transition to "city" life.  But it was the best decision she ever made.

My dad has been gone almost 50 years...still miss him...was back in Butte this summer and my cousin kept introducing me as Dr. Bill's daughter...felt good.

My mom did a great job as a single parent.  She definitely was John Ruther's daughter and I'm sure he helped her with decision making.

Subject: Re: Farrell, Ruther, Kane history

My son, Nick, also has a DNA profile on ancestry (N.C.)...he currently comes up related to my sister Moe and and think your sister MM.

Steve and I were married in 1987 and had Nick in 1995.  He turns 21 next week and just left for school in Indiana.  He is a junior at Purdue studying Astronautical Engineering.  Steve is an actuary by training but retired after a heart transplant in 2009 (virus).  He now is suffering from dementia that they do not feel is related to the transplant.  Still manageable at home but doesn't travel very well.  I researched the Camferdam family history and had Nick's DNA tested looking for Scandinavian roots.  Found out when we visited Ireland in 2013 that County Waterford is basically a Viking city so a lot of Irish from Waterford will show Scandinavian DNA rather than full Irish.  Not sure how it relates to Cork.

Never changed my name out of sheer laziness...never wanted to take time off work to go to SSA...too much trouble.  When I had the time, we already had real estate and a family trust and it didn't make sense to go through and change my name on all those documents.  I have no objection to being called Camferdam, but really, Mary Ellen Camferdam...what form will that name fit on...just never a Mary.

My uncle John was a hell raiser from an early age. My mother, who was four years older, was given the blame by Veronica for the much trouble John got into as a kid.
Born March 3, 1927 in Omaha. Died September 27, 2006.
He was out in his driveway working on something and collapsed and died before the paramedics got there.
I will ask my cousins what they know about their father's Creighton Prep Days.
I was wondering why Bob had a strong connection to the Devaney side of the family. It looks like Joanne Devaney's father was the same age as Bob and also attended Creighton Prep. I have that on my list of "Questions for Bob"..

Testimony of eye-witnesses (e.g., Hulda Karlsdotter Peterson [his mothe]));
moreover, all our family birthdays are in February: mine is the third, my
mother's is the tenth, my father's (i.e. Horton Leonard) is the
seventeenth, his father (Frank Dahlquist) is the 24th. Easily rattled off
mnemonically as "3,10,17,24).

You could also check the gravestones at Westlawn Cemetery the next time
you're in town.

10:28 AM (3 hours ago)

My father was born February 17, 1894. Just as a matter of curious information, I was born on February 3, my mother, a week later, on February 10, my father on the 17th, and his father on the 24th. All a week apart.

181. Interview with Jack Amdor, at Bob Dahlquist’s 90th birthday party, Feb 3, 2024, Benzon AZ

Jack was raised on the farm in Massina, went to Iowa State to become a vet. Liked the work, but said that the fellow farmers who he grew up with didn’t think he needed to be paid. Got tired of having no money so he applied at Iowa State for various jobs, One offered was being a USDA meat inspector at local packing plants. They asked “why do you want to be a meat inspector” and he replied “I don’t but I need the money, and you pay a salary right?” He took the job.

COASTER TRAIN LEAVES TRACK, 4 ARE KILLED.
TWENTY OTHERS WERE INJURED IN ACCIDENT WHICH OCCURRED AT OMAHA PARK LAST NIGHT.
CARS CRUMPLE IN FRAMEWORK -- ACCIDENT OCCURRED AS THE FOUR CARS APPROACHED THE TOP OF A STEEP INCLINE.
Omaha, Neb., July 25 -- (UP) -- Authorities today examined the testle of a Roller Coaster train which plunged from its tracks here last night carrying four persons to their deaths and injuring 20 others.
RUTH FARRELL, 14, daughter of an Omaha contractor; C. H. STOUT, 50, salesman, and TONY POLITKA, 23, died soon after the accident, and the remaining score may spend many days in hospitals recovering from injuries which left most of them unconscious for hours.
The cars hurtled from the Coaster tracks half was up a sharp ascent, and crumpled in the framework of supports below.
Seventeen of the 20 injured were unconscious when taken to hospitals.
Four cars of the pleasure seekers had been joined together. As the train slowly approached the top of the steep incline, a crowd gathered to watch the breath taking dip.
Cries of excitement suddenly were turned to screams of fright as the rails apparently gave way. The crack of the splintering guard railing was followed by the crash of the cars to earth. A moment of awed silence followed then panic reigned among the crowd of witnesses.
"I heard someone shout 'they're falling," BEN MEISTERS, one of the witnesses said. "As I looked up, the cars seemed to balance for a moment on the edge of the track, then plunged to the supporting trestles below."
"In the instant before the drop to earth, several women tried to jump from the cars. One or two seemed to have gotten out but fell just ahead of the crashing coaches. I think they were hurt badly or killed. Ambulances took them away."
Emergency physicians, called to the scene, were forced to fight their way through the crowds of terrified onlookers. First aid treatment was given a few of the injured, but most of them were hurried to hospitals.
A car bolt, loosened by vibration, was blamed by inspectors today for the wreck of the Roller Coaster which crashed through the guard rails here last night, killing four picnickers and injuring a score of their companions.
A bolt slipped from the first car of the four-car train, a brake shoe dropped, and as a result the miniature train plunged through the side rails, falling 35 feet to the ground with its terrified passengers.
The park is owned by M. F. COSTELLO, A. R. GOETZ and L. F. INGERSOLL, all of St. Joseph, Mo.
Confusion followed the accident.
Action of BEN MEISTER, a city fireman, in turning in a fire alarm as well as a police call, probably saved the situation.
Half a dozen fire companies rolled up to the park in a few moments and soon succeeded in restoring order in the distracted crowd.

ROLLER COASTER TRAIN IN OMAHA LEAVES TRESTLE.
HEAVILY LOADED CARS OVERTURN AND CRUSH PASSENGERS, FOUR OF WHOM ARE DEAD AND THREE OTHERS MOMENTARILY EXPECTED TO EXPIRE -- SIXTEEN OTHERS INJURED IN ACCIDENT WHICH THROWS THOUSANDS INTO PANIC AT KRUG PARK.
Omaha, July 25 -- (AP) -- Crushed and battered when four cars of a heavy roller coaster train toppled over the edge of a 35 foot incline at Krug park here last night, pinning them beneath, four persons are dead and nineteen injured, three being in a critical condition.
Fourth to die was MRS. GLADYS LUNDGREN, 29, of Des Moines, Ia., who was spending her vacation here with friends. She succumbed today in a local hospital.
Acting Coroner Steinwender, Building Commissioner Edgecomb and City Commissioner Hopkins, went over the ruins of the coaster at the park this morning in their investigation.
List of Dead.
The dead are:
C. H. STOUT, 34, salesman, who died soon after being taken to a hospital.
RUTH FARRELL, 15, who was crushed by a falling car and died enroute to a hospital.
TONY POLITIKA, 22, who died early today at a hospital where he had been taken, suffering from a crushed chest, possible spinal fracture and internal injuries.
MRS. GLADYS LUNDGREN, 29, Des Moines who was the companion of STOUT on the ride, and suffered a brain injury, fractured rib and possible punctured lung.
The Badly Injured.
Those still reported critically injured were:
MARY POLITIKA, 16, sister of TONY, scalped, possible skull fracture, may lose eye.
HELEN CZAJA, 27, skull fracture, internal injuries.
WILLIAM BUTKUS, severe scalp wound, concussion of the brain.
Of the remaining injured all were reported improving today and out of danger.
The accident was a tragic ending to a day of merriment for the STOUT and LUNDGREN families. The LUNDGRENS had arrived from Des Moines yesterday for a vacation visit with the STOUTS. They had gone to the park for an outing, but when someone suggested a swimming party, MRS. LUNDGREN declined to join them because she had a cold. She chose to ride the coaster and STOUT agreed to accompany her.
ANTIS UZDAWINIS, who was riding in the third car, said that the cog chain pulled their car over the edge of the rails and over the track edge.
"There was no time to jump and we could do nothing but scream and tug at the safety belts that held us firmly in our seats," ANTIS said from his hospital bed.
ANDREW BAZIS, also riding in the third car, repeated the words of UZDAWINIS and declared that the cog chain continued to pull the train onward after the first car had plunged down.
Within a few seconds after the crash the crowd was surging madly about the scene of the wreck wildly seeking relatives and friends. The park was packed and all available police were rushed there to battle the crowd. At times the surging throng hindered the rescue crews greatly in reaching the injured and in transporting them to cars in which they were rushed to hospitals.
The driveway leading to the front of the coaster station was so packed that police were forced to tear down sections of the fence surrounding the park in order to get ambulances and other cars through to transport the injured away.
Preliminary investigation by park, city and insurance company officials, begun today, indicated that the tragedy was caused by a faulty brake shoe on one of the cars. City officials today held the theory that the shoe slipped around and caught beneath the rear wheels on one of the cars, after the nut and bolt holding it in place had come loose. The car was thrown off the track, tore through a flimsy guard rail and poised momentarily on the brink. Then the first car slipped over the edge, plunging downward and pulling the other three cars to the lower level track beneath. Three of the cars overturned, pinning most of the occupants beneath them.
City Commissioner Hopkins, head of the city building department, announced today that he will introduce an ordinance which would ban the operation of roller coasters within the city limits.
City Commissioner Roy Towl, who is an engineer, today critizied the structure as being old. He said that the wood in it is rotten in several places and that much of it is more than 10 years old.
An inquest is to be held here tomorrow to determine if there is any criminal responsibility in the case.

Good day Cousin Anita,

What a great email you sent with photos! I had to learn something new….how to convert .heic extensions to .jpg extensions to view a few of the photos.

The photo of you, your mom and your dad, from 1986, looks similar to the solo photo I had found online from your dad’s obituary. Maybe a different year, but very similar. It’s a great family photo!

How sad and challenging for children to lose their parents at such a young age. I was fortunate that my dad lived to 82 and mom to 88. I still wish it would have been longer. I live with my special lady, Elisa, who was born in Argentina. She lost her father when she was around 12 years of age. To this day, it has an impact on her.

It is interesting to hear that your dad worked for the railroads. Frances Lyons Taylor married Albert Taylor, who worked for the railroad. Albert was shot and killed by a fellow worker in the railroad yards in Truckee, CA in 1914. I have attached a couple of articles regarding the murder, one the newspaper article and the second is an appeals court decision regarding the murder conviction where I highlighted the discussion of the events of the murder. The railroad apparently gave Frances a clerical job with the railroads until she decided to retire. Frances raised her three daughters (Helen, Litta, and Lucille) on her own. I love your photo that has Frances and Helen in 1918. That would have been just 4 years after Albert was killed. I am assuming Fan is the woman on the left of the photo and Helen is standing next to her with the bow in her hair. Helen would have been about 16 in 1918. I’m wondering if this photo is 1918 or earlier as Rita was born in 1915 and is an infant in this photo.  Frances was called “Fannie”. I knew Frances as living with my grandparents, her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Bill Gorman in the 1960’s. We referred to her as “Nannie Taylor”. I don’t remember much about her unfortunately. She was in a convalescent home the last few years of her life. I really disliked the convalescent homes as a child. She died shortly before my 14th birthday. I feel guilty as I didn’t want to miss school to attend the funeral. I’m not much of one for funerals! I now regret not having gone to the funeral.

It is unfortunate that we realize later in life what we have missed out on learning about our family heritage. I started working on our family tree on ancestry.com back in 2007. It was slow intermittent work at that time. I retired at 60 in 2015. Since that time, and especially during Covid, I have spent too many hours looking for more information. I should get out and exercise more! J The pieces slowly fall into place. I have a niece who states; “Who cares?” when I talk about our family history. My oldest daughter gave me a subscription to storyworth.com, where you can write stories about growing up and family history. The website sends out weekly suggested questions that you can write a story about. When ready, they will publish the stories in a hard cover book for the family. I am attaching a chapter from the story I wrote about the Taylors (Frances Lyons Taylor) and Gormans. I write the story to my children. You will see some of their comments at the end of the story.

I have attached a photo of Albert, Frances and Helen in front of their home in Bloomington, IL. There is a photo in my story of Frances later in life sitting with the Gorman family and another photo of Helen, Litta and Lucille sitting on the back of a donkey as children.

Ancestry.com requires a membership to research records. Originally, I was able to create a login with free membership where I started creating our family tree. I am not certain, but it may still be possible to create an account for free and view the family tree. My tree is titled mkemp150 on ancestry.com. I still consider myself a novice, but fortunately, I have found substantial family information. As you know, I am on 23andme.com23andme.com allows to create a family tree, however, it is limited to the number of people that can be placed on a tree. I maxed that number out long ago. I take the blood line relatives from 23andme.com and try to locate them in my ancestry.com tree. It is very often extremely challenging to line up distant relatives, especially beyond 3rd cousins when the surnames are not in my tree.

I attached two photos of Helen Taylor as an infant and as a young woman. I attached a photo of my parents Carol and Dick Kemp standing behind Helen and Bill Gorman and my father’s mother Dagne Kemp form the 1970’s. I attached a photo of my family, my parents and four sisters and myself from around 1968.

Frances was born in Colorado. She and Albert Taylor were living in Illinois with the three daughters. Albert was killed in California. I need to find out when and how Frances came to be living in California. I know all of the daughters, including Helen, were living here in California. It is interesting that your mom and dad were in Nebraska as a result of the railroad. I have both Stella Lyons and Harry Scogin being born in Illinois. It appears the Lyons family was moving around somewhat.

There was some information that I ran across a while back that I need to follow up on further. It may have been Stella and Frances’ grandmother, Joanna Savage, that I think came to the US from England, was married and had children, when her husband passed away. The story I thought I had found somewhere, was that Joanna returned to England without her children, remarried and came back to the US where she had a second family. This would have included Sarah Jane Hill, Stella’s and Frances’ mother, who later married Daniel Lyons. This needs further research!!!!

Thank you again Anita for sharing your history and photos with me. I will share them with my sisters. I hope I didn’t jump back and forth too much!

I will keep in touch,

Your Cousin Mark

238. Jeanne Louise Devaney Carroll email, January 17, 2024

My name is Jeanne Louise Devaney Carroll.  My paternal great-grandmother was Catherine Burke Devaney (aka Gaga). She was Ellen "Nellie" Elizabeth Burke's sister.  As you know, Nellie Farrell was Bob Dahlquist's grandmother, and your aunt.  I was born in Omaha on July 11, 1956.  I have two brothers who live in Omaha.  My Mom is Jacqueline Rashid Devaney. She is 88yo and resides in Omaha.

My Dad was James Burke Devaney.  His father was James Edward Devaney., son of Catherine and PeterJoseph Devaney.  My paternal grandmother was Louise Plunkett Devaney.  My Dad and Bob  Dahlquist were 2nd cousins. My Dad died on June 15, 1985. He had a glioblastoma (brain tumor). My Dad and Bob went to Creighton Prep together!!

Bob has always been a part of my life. I was born and raised in Omaha, NE.   I have lived in Duluth, MN since I came to college here in 1974.  When my husband, Chris Carroll, and I were in Omaha last October, Bob was also in Omaha visiting his wife's sister.  Bob joined my Mom and my husband and I for a day.  I asked Bob how we were related. My Dad and he had always said they were cousins.  It was then that I learned they were second cousins and that their grandmothers were sisters!!  Seems to me that you and my Dad would have been second cousins also! That makes you my second cousin once removed.

My Dad had one sister. She is still living in Omaha. She had 8 children.  I married at age 47! My husband and I do not have children.

One of my Dad's Devaney cousins did some family genealogy and I have the notebook they put their information in many years ago.  It is not up to date, but I did find some pictures to share with you.

Thanks for reaching out to me!!  I am a retired medical social worker. I always say "you have to have the conversation to make the connection!"  So sorry we will not be able to attend Bob’s 90th birthday party! We don’t travel in the winter.

Jeanne

Subject: RE: Lyons genealogy

I can see that a lot of effort and time have gone into compiling the many connected lines in your family. Rev. G. William Hickman was my great grandfather, so I was interested in exploring that aspect of your site. When I noticed that my grandfather's name needed to be changed to Eldredge Benedict Johnson, known as E.Ben Johnson, I realized that some of your information probably must have come from collateral sources who were helping to fill in the blanks.

I found Sarah Dawson, the youngest daughter of Cynthia Ann Gooseman-Heddleston-Dawson and the half-sister of Great Grandmother Didemma Heddleston-Hirschmann. She was there all the time but I didn't know her married name until the last few days. Now I have pieced together some information that will help. Subject: Re: when was your father born?

Both my grandfather, Frank Dahlquist, and grandmother, Hulda Peterson, came
to the US on the same ship, the SS Bothnia, -- didn't know each other, just happened to be fellow passengers.

The ship left Goteborg for Queenstown in Ireland and then proceeded onto New York. The year was 1884; he was
twenty-five, she was twenty. Both went to Omaha, got married, and became US citizens in 1889. The story about the name change I got from one of my Swedish cousins, Don Clow, son of Eva, sister of my father.

Don said that both Frank and his brother George came on the same ship together.

Their father was Jon Josefson, and the two of them thought that "Josefson" didn't sound Swedish enough, so they told the authorities at Ellis Island that their name was "Dahlqvist."

George, incidentally, was an accomplished musician and left any number of pieces recorded on cylindrical records. He died an unfortunate death in the Easter Sunday tornado in Omaha, in 1913, and is buried in the Dahlquist family plot in Omaha.

My grandmother paid seven dollars for the trip, in steerage. How much was that in current dollars?

I think if a tornado had come down G Street or anywhere near, I would have
heard about it from Nellie. I heard every story of life on G Street many times over in the course of my seventeen years there.

Might have been a terrible storm, though. On the periphery.
Frank Dahlquist died in 1939. I can't be more specific than that.

Hi Patrick,

I do not think we have a connection, but we sure do have a lot of the same
Farrell names in our families.
My Farrell's were from Charleville, County Cork, Ireland.

My Peter J. Farrell studied to be a priest at Christian Brothers school
in Ireland, but never became a priest. He immigrated to the US and lived
on and operated a small farm in Shrewsbury, NJ. He also worked construction
jobs requiring the use of his horse teams.

Peter's parents were Peter Farrell & Mary Croke, his siblings included
Anna (my great grandmother), Margaret, Katherine, John, James, & Mary.

Peter J. Farrell b. March 31, m. Edith Meredith, she had 2 children, Irene
& James from a former marriage to a Mr. Tolman. Together they had Thomas,
Peter, Mary, George, & John.

Peter J. Farrell is buried in Middletown/Redbank, NJ at the Olivet Cemetery.

Happy Searching!
313. Katie Farrell - 1908 - 2002
I have copies of several letters that were given to my mother by your mother.  The first was the 1900 letter from Peter Farrell to his brother Dan Farrell (mention made of a third brother, Thomas).  The next two letters, written to your mother in 1978, (one from Katie and one from Peter O'Farrell) in response to her letter addressed to occupant at the Charleville address.  Peter's letter mentions several enclosures that I assume are with your mother's research. Armed with that information, my brother Mike and sister Jo Anne visited with Katie in the early 80s (separately) and Aunt Lorraine Ruther and cousin Mary Pat Amdor visited Katie on a trip they took to Ireland in 1988.  My mother never made it to Ireland but did write to Katie several times and the attached is the response she received.  I will let you work your way through it, that's half the fun, but I did transcribe it if you run into any difficulty.  Katie was pretty sharp for 90.  The two other women mentioned (sisters) are also distant relatives of ours...I have seen their names in ancestry research sites but have never tried to contact them. I believe Linda John Kane (no relation to us) and Donna John Van Janke are GGGrandaughters of Anna Farrell Ahern, Peter Farrell's daughter.
314. Donna Van Jahnke

That would be fine, but you probably know more than I do. I haven't yet really spoke to or met Nicola Simcox. I know she is a relation though! Kate gave me her name. I visited Ireland back in 1997 and met Kate Farrell (O'Farrell) who lived in the Farrell homestead on the corner of Bruree Road on the N20. I loved seeing the old homestead and it was so nice to meet Kate and a few of the cousins. Kate was already getting on in years when we met, but we kept in touch by letter for quite some time. It was young Kevin who was bartending at O'Farrell's Pub in Charleville that put me in touch with Kate. The Pub was owned at the time by his dad, Kevin, Sr. Another son, Tom, stopped by Kate's when my sister and I were visiting, so we were able to meet him too. Kevin's kids were probably all in their early 20's at the time. Kevin's daughter Deirdre Farrell lived at the family homestead after Kate passed. Deirdre's married name is O'Rourke and she has a family.

I don't think the original house is there anymore.

I heard sometime later that Kevin O'Farrell sold the pub and bought a feed store. I am not sure if he still owns it.

Young Kevin has a beautiful family and Tom is married too.

Kate gave me some genealogy information on her big family that I would have to pull out to remember. I will have to get back to you on that. If I am remembering correctly, Kate was the daughter of my grandmother's brother -  my grandmother's niece.

Enjoy your holidays.

Pat
Uncle Jerry was never married. He was a bricklayer in England for many years but came back to Maiden Hall in the late 60's to live with Kate his sister.
I don't have Jerry's date of death yet. I am waiting for several dates from my sister. I sent you a mortuary card for Uncle Tom....I have various ones which I can send you if you are interested.

I have not seen the letter before. It is from my aunt Kate. Interesting that the name Kane shows up in two different family lines. I met Jo Anne Kane and her sister I believe when they visited. Also interested in that she says Donna Van Jaynke had a photo of her grandmother (Mary Croke) since my family has never seen it. I must ask Donna about it. Thanks for sharing.
